Super Rugby to make earliest start to season in 2020
Super Rugby will create its earliest start to a season in the history of the competition , together with the first game.
Auckland Blues will sponsor the Waikato Chiefs on January 31 and the tournament will now run uninterrupted till July, when the new international Test window begins.
In preceding non-World Cup years, the mostly southern hemisphere competition took a break to accommodate an worldwide window in June before resuming in early July.
"An earlier than normal start was required to make it through the 21-week championship and provide the federal teams with a clear week leading in the July test collection," said Andy Marinos, the first executive of regulating body SANZAAR.
The 2020 Super Rugby year will also be the final year for the Sunwolves of Japan following them cut after the Japan Rugby Union's decision to withdraw their support of the group.
It is going to be the year of this conference system, with a structure to return in 2021.
When they confront Waratahs, reigning champions Crusaders will begin their bid for a fourth straight title on February 1.
